IIS (Internet Information Server) is a group of Internet servers (including a Web or Hypertext Transfer Protocol server and a File Transfer Protocol server) with additional capabilities for Microsoft's operating systems.


Installing IIS v8.0 on Windows Server 2012

Important Note: Do not uninstall or uncheck any Roles or Features that are already installed. Check with the IT staff before making any changes to IIS when IIS is already installed. If you get to Step 6 and the option is already checked, stop and consult with the IT staff that set it up.

  1. Click on the Server Manager icon on the Taskbar. It is the icon on the far left.

  1. Click on 2 Add roles and features.

  1. Step: Before You Begin - Click Next.

  1. Step: Installation Type - Select Role-based or feature-based installation.

  1. Step: Server Selection - Choose select a server from the server pool then ensure this server is highlighted, click Next.

  1. Step: Server Roles - If this Role is already checked, IIS is already installed. Stop here and consult with the IT staff that set up IIS before making any other changes.
    1. Otherwise, click Web Server (IIS) and click Next.

  1. Step: Server Roles - Add features that are required for Web Server (IIS)? Click the Add Features button then click Next.

  1. Step: Features - Check these two features and ensure the following options are selected then click Next.
    1. .NET Framework 3.5 Features
    2. NET Framwork 3.5 (Includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)
    3. NET Framework 4.5 Features
    4. NET Framework 4.5
    5. ASP.NET 4.5
    6. WCF Services
    7. HTTP Activation
    8. TCP Port Sharing

  1. Step: Server Roles - Add features that are required for HTTP Activation? Click the Add Features button then click Next.

  1. Step: Server Roles - Web Server Role (IIS) - Click Next.

  1. Step: Server Roles - Web Server Role (IIS) | Role Services - Leave the default selections then Click Next.

  1. Step: Confirm installation selections, click Install.

  1. Step: Results - Installation progress - The features you selected are installing, please wait.

  1. Step: Results - Installation progress - The installation has succeeded, click Close.

Verifying IIS v8.0 has been successfully installed

  1. Click Start then Internet Explorer.
  2. If successfully opened, IIS has been installed.
