 +Deriving products from Line Item is by far the fastest way to set up derived products. A base product can be set up with all the pricing and calculations in place and then be overridden with only those small differences that make it easier and faster to get orders into the system. A derived product can be created from a derived product line item. The same steps are used as a base product.

 +====== Alice's Amazing Signs ======
 +
 +
 +
 +Alice's Amazing Signs primarily makes two types of signs, Real Estate Signs (Printed on Coroplast) and Commercial Display Signs (Printed on Sintra). Both of these products are printed on Alice's flatbed printer, and Alice already has a Flatbed Prints product set up in Control in the Digital Print Product Category. Alice would like to have a faster way for her salespeople to add those two products to orders without needing the salespeople to specify the material for each type of product.

 +Since Alice isn't sure about all the variable names she needs to use and is in a hurry, she decides to save her new derived products from a new order. Alice could also use the [[derived_product_variable_overriding|Product Setup]] to set up the Derived Product but chooses not to at this time.
 +  - Alice starts a new order and adds her Flatbed Prints product to the order.
 +  - In the pricing form, Alice specifies her machine (a Vutek), her material type (Coroplast), and her material (Coro - 4 mil White 18 x 24)
 +  - Deciding that this derived product will be specifically for 18" x 24" signs, Alice also specifies the height and width as 18", and 24" respectively
 +  - Alice confirms all her changes and clicks OK
 +  - In the line item list, Alice right-clicks the newly added line item, hovers the mouse down to Line Item Options and clicks the "Save as New Derived Product" option

 +  - The line item name changes to the name Alice typed into the dialog
 +  - Alice now repeats the process for the Commercial Display Signs, using the appropriate material for that product.
 +  - After completing the second derived product, Alice's salespeople are able to use these derived products when creating new orders.
 +  - If Alice wants to go and modify her new Derived Products, she can find both of them in "Setup -> Pricing Setup -> All Pricing Setup -> Product Setup -> Digital Prints" Product Category
