Line 1: Line 1:
+Overriding a variable is one of ways to set up derived products. A base product can be set up with all the pricing and calculations in place and then the derived product only has to have those variables which are overridden with the unique differences to make it easier and faster to get orders into the system. Additionally derived products can be modified after they are created to correct or add other values as needed.

+To create a new derived product, let's take a look at the example below:
 +
 +
 +
 +===== Starting a new derived product =====
 +
 +
 +
+Bob's Sign Shop makes two types of signs, primarily. Real Estate Signs ( Printed on Coroplast) and Commercial Display Signs (Printed on Sintra). Both of these products are printed on Bob's flatbed printer, and Bob already has a Flatbed Prints product set up in Control. Bob would like to have a faster way for his salespeople to add those two products to orders without needing the salespeople to specify the material for each type of product.
 +
 +
 +
+Since Bob already has some experience with Product Setup, he decides to start from there to set up his new derived products. (Bob could also use the [[derived_product_derived_from_line_item|save as derived]] option on one of his existing orders to get started, but chooses not to at this time)

+  - Add a variable that needs to be overridden for this specific "flavor" of the base product. (Bob would like to set the machine, material type, and material for each of his derived products, Coroplast for Real Estate, and Sintra for Commercial Display)

+===== Modifying an existing derived product =====
 +
 +
 +
+Alice from Alice's Amazing Signs already had set up two products using the [[derived_product_derived_from_line_item|Save as Derived]] method. She realized that a few additional changes were needed to get the Real Estate Sign working correctly.
